Understanding Puppy Coughing: Common Causes and Treatments
Published on April 11 by Julia
If your puppy is coughing, it might sound alarming — but in many cases, it’s nothing serious. Puppies can cough for a variety of reasons, and understanding the most common causes can help you figure out whether it’s normal or needs a vet visit.
One of the most frequent reasons is kennel cough, a contagious but usually mild infection that causes a dry, hacking cough. Puppies can catch it after being around other dogs, like at a shelter or park. Allergies or irritants like dust, smoke, or cleaning products can also make your puppy cough occasionally, especially if they’re sensitive.

Parasites like lungworm or heartworm are less common, but they can also cause coughing and require veterinary treatment. Some respiratory infections, like a puppy cold or mild pneumonia, may lead to coughing too — especially if it comes with sneezing, a runny nose, or tiredness. Small breeds may rarely cough due to tracheal issues, often sounding like a goose honk.
If your puppy’s cough is occasional and they’re otherwise happy and playful, you may not need to worry. But if it’s frequent, comes with other symptoms (like lethargy, loss of appetite, or breathing problems), or lasts more than a few days, it’s best to check with your vet. Catching problems early makes treatment easier — and keeps your pup happy and healthy.
